Family Photography

We're not just capturing memories for you - we're creating heirlooms for generations to come.

Have you ever looked at your child and felt like you're only really seeing at them for the first time? Like they've suddenly gotten older, but you can't put your finger on what has actually changed, or when?

That is why I so passionately believe in the value of yearly family photoshoots... because you don't realise how quickly your children change until you're looking back.

A Flora Photo Co family photoshoot focuses on capturing the love, joy, connection and chaos of your everyday family moments. I generally start our sessions with some group photos, and will always endeavour to get solo shots of your littles, too. These family photos aren't meant to be perfect; they're meant to be you. No awkward poses, no fake smiles, and certainly no weird props. Just you, your fam, and a whole lotta love.

Child-Led Sessions & Bodily Autonomy

I pride myself on being as child-led as possible during family photoshoots. This means that your children are empowered to decide how they would like to engage with me - and you - during their session.

I believe that:

1. Children have the right to decide who touches their body
(unless it's a matter of health or safety).

If your child doesn't want you to hold them, for example, that's ok, and I'll never force them to cooperate - we'll get some beautiful images of them tickling you or playing by your side instead.

2. Children each have their own quirks, and the best photos come from embracing them
.

If your child is highly energetic, asking them to be still and hold lots of poses might be really tough for them. I encourage you to lean in to your child's personality, so we can capture authentic memories, rather than manufactured moments.

3. Through play, we create connection.

Whenever possible, I try to make my image prompts a game. Instead of asking your child to stand next to you and smile, I'll ask, "Can you go and tickle Mummy?", or instead of saying, "Let Daddy hold you so I can get a photo of you two together", I'll ask if they'd like a shoulder ride from Daddy.

By facilitating prompts through play, I aim to reduce stress on all members of your family, and hope to create a welcoming environment where everyone can get out of their head and into their heart.

What to expect at
your family photoshoot

When should I organise a family photoshoot?

The easier question is, "when shouldn't I organise a family photoshoot?"... and the answer is "never!". There's never a bad time to update your family photos. I personally have my own family photos taken each year in August or September, as that's around my daughter's birthday, but there are pros and cons for all seasons.

If you're after a sunset at the beach, I recommend booking for autumn or spring, when the wind tends to be less intense. If you're wanting luscious green fields, book from May through to early November. If you're after golden fields, book from late November to the end of January. Otherwise, book whenever feels right for you, and we can find the perfect location based on the time of year and your aesthetic preferences.

What locations are good for family photography in Perth?

There are so many beautiful locations around Perth that are well-suited for family photography sessions. My personal favourites are fields (available NOR and SOR), but I can also recommend appropriate beaches or urban locations across the Perth metro area, and I very much enjoy exploring the salt flats near Mandurah, too. Once you're booked, you'll receive my comprehensive location guide with further details and any associated travel fees.

Who should be included in a family photoshoot?
My regular family photoshoots include two parents and three children - this can be two parents and their three adult children, or a couple with their young children. Extended family photoshoots can be arranged for an additional fee.

How do I choose a family photographer near me?
Selecting a family photographer in Perth to photograph your family can be a tough choice. There are a lot of us out there! I recommend starting your search by answering the three questions below. Remember, there are no wrong answers - just what suits your vision and your personality.

1) What style of photography would you prefer?
Are you more drawn to relaxed, intimate photography that captures your kids just being kids, or do you feel more aligned with posed-to-perfection images that are more formal? Each photographer works differently, and we all tend to specialise in different things. Starting here is a great way to narrow down your search.

2) Do you prefer bright, bold colours or more muted tones?
Each family photographer in Perth will have their own style of editing. Some will prefer to edit with bold, punchy colours; others may tend towards a light and airy style of editing; and others again may lean towards a moodier, muted vibe. I personally describe my editing style as warm and dreamy: I draw inspiration from the soft, neutral colours of the Australian landscape, and enjoy incorporating sun flares into my work.

3) From what you’ve seen, do you like your intended photographer as a person?
This is, in my opinion, the most important point to consider. Choose a photographer whose energy resonates with you, as this is what will help set the tone of the session. I'm an ambivert - meaning that I'm a bit  of an extroverted introvert - and pride myself on being able to adapt my working style to accommodate a range of personalities and needs.

What if my child acts out during our family photo session?

Let me let you in on a little secret... no child has ever been 100% a perfect angel in front of my camera, and I don't expect them to be. Why? Because children are children, not robots! They have personalities of their own: their own likes and dislikes, their own interests, and their own tolerance level towards new people and situations.

I structure all my sessions with young children so that we have time to play and explore when they're starting to get bored, and so there is time for them to decompress at the beginning. I pride myself on being child-led, and so please let me reassure you - it's ok if your little monkey is being, well, a little monkey. It'll make for some great photos!

How should we dress for a family photoshoot?

For a family photoshoot, I think comfort has to take priority for the kids! I recommend natural fibres and the tones you'd find in nature - creams, tans, rusts, soft sage or olive greens, and a pop of black or a pattern is always a nice way to break up colours.

If your child has sensory issues, I recommend cutting off all the tags to their clothes before you dress them in it, and making sure they've worn the clothes at least twice before so the feel of a new cut/fabric texture/seam structure doesn't overwhelm them on the day.

How do I pose during our family photos?

It’s natural and expected to be apprehensive and even a little nervous at the thought of having to pose in front of a camera, but with my help, you won’t need to consider how to pose for your family photos at all. My style of photography is all about natural connection, genuine emotion, and having fun. I’ll guide you through a range of prompts that will beautifully highlight your connection your partner and children, and we'll always finish off with a bit of fun at the end.

Tip: bring water and snacks like crackers or an apple to ensure your kids are fed, watered and happy.
